Salvation By Allegiance Alone 7

"Matthew Bates argues that faith or believing is not mere assent, not easy believism, but covenantal loyalty to the God who saves his people through the Lord Jesus Christ. Bates forces us to rethink the meaning of faith, the gospel, and works with a view to demonstrating their significance for true Christian discipleship. This will be a controversial book, but perhaps it is the controversy we need!"
Michael F. Bird, lecturer in theology, Ridley College, Melbourne, Australia
(1)easy believism
(2)Christian discipleship
(3)covenantal loyalty

Salvation By Allegiance Alone 6

 Faith as Allegiance
 What Allegiance (Faith) is Not
 The Gospel of Allegiance
 Three Elements of Faith

Is Salvation by Allegiance a Kind of Works?
Is Faith-as-Allegiance Yet Another Instance of the Law of Moses?
So How Much Allegiance is Required?
When the Gospel includes New Creation
Matthew Bates: When Justification Meets Allegiance

In other words, the real “faith” versus “works” divide in Paul is more accurately framed as a divide between works performed as allegiance to Jesus the king versus works performed apart from new creation in the Christ. And the latter usually but not always takes the form of a system that seeks to establish righteousness through performing prescribed regulations.

Salvation By Allegiance Alone 5

 Faith as Allegiance
 What Allegiance (Faith) is Not
 The Gospel of Allegiance
 Three Elements of Faith

Is Salvation by Allegiance a Kind of Works?
Is Faith-as-Allegiance Yet Another Instance of the Law of Moses?
So How Much Allegiance is Required?
When the Gospel includes New Creation
Matthew Bates: When Justification Meets Allegiance

It all depends on how the gospel is framed. Is it about how to go to heaven when you die? About being released from guilt? About liberation from some kind of (spiritual or social) slavery? Let this be said over and over: How we frame the gospel determines what the response is.

Ⅲ. 福音
… the gospel is the power-releasing story of Jesus’s life, death for sins, resurrection, and installation as king, but that story only makes sense in the wider framework of the stories of Israel and creation. The gospel is not in the first instance a story about heaven, hell, making a decision, raising your hand after praying a certain prayer, justification by faith alone, trusting that Jesus’s righteousness is sufficient, or any putative human tendencies toward self-salvation through good works. It is, in the final analysis, most succinctly good news about the enthronement of Jesus the atoning king as he brings these wider stories to a climax (30).
Ⅳ. Allegiance to the Enthroned King

  1. Mental affirmation/intellectual agreement: certain enough to yield.
  2. Professed fealty to Jesus as Lord (Rom 10:9-10).
  3. Enacted loyalty to the king, as in the obedience of faith.
“If we remember that the allegiance concept welds mental agreement, professed fealty, and embodied loyalty, foregrounding allegiance makes excellent contextual sense in all of these crucial passages” (82).

以上、主に、The Gospel of Allegianceと、Three Elements of Faithから紹介しました。

Salvation By Allegiance Alone 4

Salvation By Allegiance Alone (1): a review on the basis of the Introduction alone
Salvation By Allegiance Alone (2): Paul’s gospel and the sweeping plains of history
Salvation By Allegiance Alone (3): pre-existence and the gospel of Jesus
Salvation By Allegiance Alone (4): the best bit so far
Salvation By Allegiance Alone (5): the exegetical evidence for faith as allegiance

Matthew Bates’ book Salvation By Allegiance Alone is further evidence that evangelicalism is wrestling honestly and constructively with the biblical, theological and practical deficiencies of the traditional understanding of gospel, faith and salvation.
1. The true climax of the gospel is the enthronement of Jesus, but this has generally been “deemphasized or omitted”.
2. Pistis has traditionally been misconstrued as “faith”—typically in the saving power of Jesus’ death. It should be understood instead as allegiance.
3. Final salvation consists not in going to heaven but in participation in the new creation. Once this “true goal” has been recognised, terms such as “faith”, “works”, “righteousness” and “gospel” can be reframed.

But it seems to me that his concern to provide a workable alternative to the traditional evangelical paradigm has led him to overlook the properly historical orientation of the New Testament narrative.

Bates is trying to read the New Testament at a cosmic level, guided by theological interests, whereas I think it needs to be read at a political level, from a more rigorously historical perspective.

I would also quibble over the casual assumption that according to the Gospel story Jesus died for our sins. I agree that when Jesus says that he has come to give his life as a ransom for many, “the substitutionary idea is foregrounded” (61), but I would argue that the redemptive logic only works in the Jewish narrative.

The claim made by the Synoptic Gospels is that Jesus died for the sins of Israel, and I would go so far as to suggest that when Paul says that “Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures” (1 Cor. 15:3), he is speaking as a Jew, on behalf of Israel. The apocalyptic-kingdom narrative uses a different logic to explain the significance of Jesus’ death for Gentiles.
This is a critical but enthusiastic review specifically from a narrative-historical perspective. I would not normally devote so much space to one book, but I’ve enjoyed my engagement with Bates’ thesis. I think that he has missed the real narrative context for the faith terminology, I have serious doubts about his attempts to tie the kingdom narrative to the pre-existence of Jesus, and I’m not persuaded that “allegiance” really identifies what Paul meant by pistis, as will become apparent from what follows. But the book nevertheless is a solid and passionate demonstration of the potential that current New Testament scholarship has to recalibrate evangelical conviction.

Basically, Bates argues that “saving allegiance” includes three dimensions: “mental affirmation that the gospel is true, professed fealty to Jesus alone as the cosmic Lord, and enacted loyalty through obedience to Jesus as the king” (92).
The distinctions are important, but it is apparent that the word “allegiance” really only applies to the third of these dimensions. So why make it the overarching category?
The translation of pistis as “allegiance” is a useful polemical and pedagogic device. It shoves justification-by-faith off its pedestal. It makes us think about gospel and faith in the frame of an eschatological narrative about Jesus and Israel in relation to the nations.

Salvation By Allegiance Alone 3

Salvation by Grace through Faith… But What Is Faith

Salvation by Allegiance Alone – Interview with Matt Bates (Part 1)
Salvation by Allegiance Alone – Interview with Matt Bates (Part 2)
Salvation by Allegiance Alone – Interview with Matt Bates (Part 3)

So we have made the gospel contain three items: “our faith,” “our justification,” and “faith in Jesus’s death for us.” My contention is that the gospel proper only includes the last item, Jesus’s death for our sins, but even then this is only a small part of the gospel and not the central target of “faith.” Saving faith is better understood as allegiance to Jesus the atoning king. The emphasis in Scripture is on loyalty to him as Messiah-king as that which forges the saving union.
The biblical witness can perhaps best be understood by juxtaposing it alongside classic Protestant and Catholic treatments. In the book, in light of the biblical evidence, I discuss some limitations to imputed righteousness (the dominant Protestant model) while still accepting it if union is explicitly foregrounded. Meanwhile, I reject Catholic imparted righteousness yet accept infused righteousness, if properly qualified. Chapter 8 in the book has the rationale and details. However, in the end I think it best for the church to prioritize new language that better reflects Scripture’s own emphases: in-the-Christ righteousness or incorporated righteousness. I am not sure who has suggested incorporated righteousness, but, wow, it’s brilliant.
I also show that “justification” was not considered by Paul to be a “step” in a person’s order of salvation. The Reformed tradition has been deeply invested in trying to systematize the true order by which salvation comes to be applied to an individual—the ordo salutis. A traditional version of the Reformed ordo salutis begins with God’s unsearchable decree to save and to damn specific individuals, and then proceeds to speak about how God comes to apply salvation to those individuals that have been elected through calling, regeneration, repentance/faith, justification, sanctification, and then, finally, glorification. It is important for the Reformed scheme that God is the primary actor in each step of the ordo salutis, otherwise human works contaminate the process. Then humans would have a “boast” before God. The problem is, I contend, that the Bible nowhere articulates an individualized ordo salutis, nor can “justification” be considered a step or stage in the order.

Salvation By Allegiance Alone 2

Salvation by Allegiance Alone: Rethinking Faith, Works, and the Gospel of Jesus the King

Salvation by Grace through Faith… But What Is Faith

Bates is careful to nuance what this entails. This does not “sneak” merit into salvation in some Pelagian or Semi-Pelagian construct. Pistis/allegiance, Bates clarifies, is not “works,” but rather “pistis is the fundamental framework into which works must fit as a part of our salvation” (109).
There is much more to this book that defining faith. Bates has in mind setting biblical soteriology straight concerning the future eschatological fate of the people of God, the place of justification in an allegiance-based understanding of faith, a biblical-theological understanding of “election,” rooted in the Bible’s context rather than later theological debates, and the connection between allegiance to Jesus and the Bible’s teaching concerning the image of God in humanity. What Bates has accomplished in such a small book is admirable. His writing is clear and accessible, yet rooted in solid scholarship. This books gets to the heart of the Bible’s vision on salvation, faith, works, and the gospel.

Salvation By Allegiance Alone 1

Salvation By Allegiance Alone』

This family, uniquely among families ......, bore only one distinguishing mark, and that was πίστις, faith. ‘Justification by faith’ was not, for Paul, a doctrine about how people could ‘find a gracious god’ without moralism. Nor does it speak merely, as the Romantic movement has encouraged some Protestants to speak, of the difference between outward and inward religion (a difference well enough known to first century Jews in any case). Nor is ‘justification by faith’ to be equated with ‘the gospel’ itself; it is, rather, its direct corollary. ‘The gospel’ is the announcement of the kingship of Jesus; ‘justification by faith’ reminds those who, abandoning their varied idolatries, have given their allegiance to Jesus that this very allegiance is the only distinguishing mark by which the renewed and united family of Abraham is to be known. All other possible distinguishing marks undermine the gospel itself, implying that the crucified and risen Jesus is not after all the one true king. Allegiance and loyalty to Jesus, ‘faith’ in this full and rich sense, is not the gospel itself; it is what the gospel is designed to produce and by the power of the spirit, does produce.
For this is where Galatians has its equivalent of the statement in Romans that the gospel is ‘the power of God for salvation to all who believe’ (Rom. 1.16). When the message of King Jesus was announced it brought forth faith, and the only explanation of this is that the spirit works as and when the message is proclaimed. That, at least, is how I believe Gal. 3.2-5 should be read, not least in light of 1 Thess. 1.4-10 and 2.13. The royal proclamation is not simply the conveying of true information about the kingship of Jesus; it is the putting into effect of that kingship, the decisive and authoritative summoning to allegiance. That is why it challenges the powers. That is why to retain, or to embrace, symbols and praxis which speak of other loyalties and other allegiances is to imply that other powers are still being invoked. And that is to deny, ‘the truth of the gospel’.
