By the time I finished it in 1985 I had undergone probably the most significant change of my theological life.

(Institute for Christian Studies in Toronto)

As Brian tells it, he kept challenging the sacred/secular dualism with which Wright was reading Colossians. Wright kept separating salvation in Christ from life in the mundane realm (including the political realm). But according to Colossians 1:15-20, the same Christ through whom all things were created, and in whom all things hang together, is the one whom all things are reconciled. The creator and redeemer are one.

Stephen Kuhrt, Tom Wright for Everyone: Putting the Theology of N. T. Wright into Practice in the Local Church (SPCK、2011)

The career of Tom Wright: emergence, scholarship and non-engagement、となっていて目下ライトの伝記的なものが殆どない中では参考となるまとめになっています。

Initially what made the lagest impact here was Wright's claim that first-century Israel understood herself to be still in a state of exile, and his presentation of Jesus as an eschatological prophet proclaiming the end of this exile. At this stage Wright was seen within the Christian world primarily as an academic with a gift for communication, and the emergence of his thought was initially regarded with favour by most evangelical Christians. While his views on 'Israel's continuing exile' and his rather different interpretation of Jesus' parables did cause some 'eyebrows to be raised', most evangelicals were very happy to see the confident challenge he was making to the scepticism of other writers on Jesus.... Those within the more academic world, whose suppositions Wright was also challenging, on the other hand, were inclined to see him as a rather eccentric churchman whose 'interesting ideas' needed taking with a rather large 'pinch of salt'.

Will Studying Theology Undermine My Faith?

Because God is gracious, I BECAME evangelical by studying Theology at Cambridge 1978-81! Tutors included "Honest to God" JAT Robinson & "Taking Leave of God" Don Cupitt. In my first year, I did a paper on the history of biblical criticism as it related to the life of Jesus. This taught me the simple truth that the results you get at the end tend to depend on the presuppositions you put in at the beginning, e.g. assume that the miraculous doesn't happen, discount or explain away all texts in which miracles happen, then conclude that, surprise, surprise, miracles don't happen!

The radically critical mindset that Elspeth describes certainly did cause damage and I'm still on the journey of dealing with it. However, I also had the privilege of having Tom Wright as New Testament tutor for 2 years: it was so helpful to be taught by someone much cleverer than I am who had a high view of Scripture and who continues to demonstrate that you don't need to leave your brains outside when you're an evangelical. In fact, most of the liberal views I struggled with as a student, he has subsequently demolished by better arguments.

I studied later at All Nations Christian College, where we were given tools for working in a cross-cultural situation, exactly what one needs for handling Scripture accurately and not something that seemed to be a priority for many in the Divinity Faculty at Cambridge. There, I perhaps harshly concluded, people were out to show how clever they were, rather than concerned to submit their undoubtedly gifted minds to God's revelation in its original context. Clearly this is a broad generalisation, but contains at least a grain of truth.

One final comment: we are so fortunate now to have a depth and breadth of evangelical scholarship that simply was not available when I was a student. We can be extremely grateful to our gracious God for it!

N. T. Wright: A Biography

In 1983 I started work on my Colossians commentary.  By the time I finished it in 1985 I had undergone probably the most significant change of my theological life.  Until then I had been basically, a dualist.  The gospel belonged in one sphere, the world of creation and politics in another.  Wrestling with Colossians 1:15-20 put paid to that.
